Utsikten (“the View”) is a family-friendly trail in the middle of the island of Freiøya that goes through a hiking area which is widely popular in both winter and summer. The trail is easy to walk on, since it primarily follows a solid forest road. You can even cycle through a large part of the Freimarka area and leave your bicycle before you start the final section of the trail to Utsikten. Once you have reached the destination of the Utsikten trail, you will get a great view of Mount Tustna in one direction and Mount Freikollen in the other.
Route description
Walk for 80 metres from the southern end of the car park in Prestmyra before you turn to the left. You will see a sign pointing to Hysåsen and Seterbakken. Follow the ski trail (the wide forest road) until you reach a fork in the path and turn left. You will see a sign pointing to Utsikten there. Carry on following the wide forest road, then after 200 metres, take the turn to the right and continue straight ahead. You will walk into the Freimarka area and see Mount Hysåsen right in front of you as you climb up a gently sloping hill. Keep to the left at the crossroads and continue following the road. The Freimarkas Venner organisation (“Friends of Freimarka”) have started the upgrading of old forest roads. Continue following the road here and walk up the “Gjensidigebakken” hill. Once you are at the top of the hill, you will see a wooden sign installed by the Kristiansund and Nordmøre Trekking Association that points left towards Moun Matlausfjellet and Lake Kjerringvatnet. Walk to the right following the path and the sign to Utsikten. A power line will be up above your head. Walk under the power line and follow the tractor track. As you continue walking through the terrain, the power line will be on your left-hand side. Along the path in front of you, you will see several trees that have been cut down. You will see a clearing between the trees in front of you. Continue walking straight ahead following the natural track left by a tractor. Climb up to the top of a gently sloping hill for the last 300 metres until you reach the trail destination. Take a short break here and enjoy the view of the mountains of Tustna. You will notice nesting box no. 61 attached to the tree near the rest area.We recommend wearing good-quality hiking shoes, since it is wet in the forest at the start of the season. The muddy ground dries up during the summer months. If you want a longer walk, you can continue all the way to Harpskaret. In that case, it is recommended that you use a map.
