This is a nice trail with the starting point in Skaret going up north to the top of Mount Urfjellet. Urfjellet is the second highest mountain in Fræna reaching up to 979 metres above the sea level. (Only Mount Kvannfjellet is a couple of metres higher.) The trail offers a fantastic view from the top in all directions — Fræna, Molde, the panoramic view of Romsdal... Up on the hillside you will find a cabin built by Jakob Sunde. It is a small hut with a guest book, and in the summer you can stay here overnight.
The two most common routes to the top are via Melsetra or with the starting point from Malmesetra (Skjetnesetra, as it is called by the locals from Molde). We chose to walk up from Melsetra, then follow the ridge down in the eastern direction and come down at Malmesetra. From there, we followed the farm road back to the starting point which was the junction between Melsetra / Malmesetra. The GPS track shows a looped trail which you can obviously follow in any direction. Alternatively, you can walk down the same way as you walked up.If you start walking from Melsetra, follow the gravel road up towards the farms (north / northwest) and turn off the road at the sign pointing to Urfjellet. Follow the path up along the fence. It might be wet here, so choose appropriate shoes! Continue walking up the steep hillside and keep to the path. It will sometimes look like a course of a stream, but the stream will be on your left-hand side. The last chance to drink or fill up your bottles before the top will be where the stream comes out of the mountain slope. The way from Sunde’s cabin up to the top is marked by cairns. If you start walking from Malmesetra, walk up the path as it follows the river. After a couple of hundred metres you will spot a small pine grove on your way up from the marsh. The path climbs up the hillside below, swings between these pine trees and continues further up to the top.
We chose to pay a toll fee of 20 NOK in Skaret driving in the direction of the farms, then drove down to the junction towards Mesetra and parked our car there. There are 3–4 parking spaces available. Alternatively, you can park your car in Skaret and walk for a couple of hundred metres down to the junction. If you choose to start walking from Malmesetra, you can drive all the way up there. This would be the easiest way up, but also the longest one.
You can park your car free of charge in Skaret, pay a toll fee of 20 NOK and park your car where the road to Melsetra begins or drive all the way up to Malmesetra and park your car there.
