Steinsøya to the fishing village of Odden

Smøla

The trail at a glance

A route through calm and shallow waters to Odden, one of the three largest fishing villages to have existed on Smøla. The fishing village of Odden comprised the main island of Odden and its two neighbouring islands of Orholmen and Korsholmen. Here there was a church, sheriff, post office, docks, boarding house and more than 100 permanent residents and seasonal workers.

Route description

It is fairly easy to navigate to Odden. The white three-storey main house on Korsholmen is clearly visible from a distance. After Odden, the route leads between the channels on the south side of Steinsøya, which will give you a beginner's route with some variety. There is a current here, but you should be able to pass easily or use it as an extra boost for your kayak. There are many channels here, but it is better to follow the route, otherwise you may end up at a dead end. There are plenty of good places to pitch a tent on Korsholmen or Odden.

Access and parking

At the Steinsøya leisure boat harbour there is plenty of parking space and you can launch your kayak from the floating dock. The exit to Steinsøya is 25 km after the ferry quay at Edøya. There is a sign from the main road. Keep to the right after exiting, drive 1.2 km to the very end and you will be at the leisure boat harbour.   There is plenty of parking, so long-term parking is possible. It is easiest to launch kayaks from one of the floating docks, but you will have to carry your kayak for a bit.

Sheltered water, but it is important to be aware of your skill level here as the weather changes quickly and the wind can suddenly become strong. Check the wind warnings in the weather reports and let others know where you're going.

Other

If you are interested in history, going ashore at Odden is recommended. Odden is a low island located spectacularly close to the open sea. It has been home to a church, sheriff's office, post office, piers, lodging houses, and over 100 permanent residents and seasonal workers. The depopulation of Odden accelerated after storm surges in 1901 and 1913.
