The island of Sandsøya with its beautiful view of the ocean and the surrounding islands is perfect for cycling. It can be a good idea to combine a bike ride on Sandsøya with a hike to one of the 8 peaks on the island or a visit to the Dollstein Cave. If you come here on Sunday when a service or a concert is held in Sande Church, you will also have the opportunity to see the interior of the church. This trail also goes via the Breidablik village museum, Sandshamna with a shop, a fish reception, a lobster park, guest harbours, and the Fiskarheimen assembly house. You will also pass two bird sanctuaries, Storevika and Vågen.
The trail starts from the Voksa ferry terminal. Cycle north along Voksavegen Road and over Marøya Island. If you turn right, you will come to Flatøy Holidays, with various activities for people of all ages. From Marøya, continue over Trettholmane, cycle over the bridge, and you will reach the island of Sandsøya. The Storevika bird sanctuary will be on the right-hand side. After you have cycled for 3.5 km from the ferry terminal, you will come to a junction. Turn left towards Skare and cycle west for about 800 m until you reach Sande Church. Take a walk down to the church and the beach nearby. From here, cycle west for 1.5 km until you reach Skare with its scenic view of Mount Dollsteinen in the north, the ocean in the west, and the island of Riste in the southwest. The final stretch out to Skare is the only uphill section of the route. Skare Feriehus in Skare offers cabin rental. Cycle back to the church from Skare. Turn left at the junction about 100 m after the church, and you will come to the Breidablik village museum after about 700 m. From here, continue further east for about 500 m until you reach the junction by the school. Turn left and cycle northwest along the south side of the Vågen bird sanctuary. You will reach Våge after about 2.5 km. Turn left and follow the road until you reach Hellandsvågane where the road ends. This section is about 2 km long, and the final 750 metres are gravel. About 100 m before the turnaround in Hellandsvågane, you will see a road that runs north. If you park your bike and walk for 250 metres along that road, you will come to a harbour with a boathouse and an old ice house. Take the same route back from Hellandsvågane. Continue straight ahead at the junction in Våge and cycle for about 1.5 km until you come to the area where Arthurspelet, a humorous historical re-enactment, takes place every two years in the month of August. After another 400 m, you will come to Sandshamna with a shop, a fish reception, a lobster park, and Rosenlund, which is a marina and a pub that also offers accommodation. Cycle south from the junction in Sandshamn, and you will reach Fiskarheimen after about 100 m. After another 400 m, you will come to Mikkelholmen with fisherman’s cabins (rorbuer) and cabins for rent. From there, cycle for 500 m until you reach a junction where you will see the school directly in front of you and Dollstun, the community hall on Sandsøya, on your right. Turn left and cycle for about 280 m until you come to another junction. Turn right to get to the ferry terminal. If you turn left at this junction, you will come to Straumsneset and Toftesund, where there used to be a mechanical workshop, a fish reception, and a cannery in the past. The area is now used for rorbu and cabin rental. If you cycle straight ahead at the junction, you will come to Voren where you will find burial mounds. The distance from the junction to the ferry terminal is about 4.3 km. You will pass the Osehaugane Stadium 250 m after the junction.
