Paddling from Askevågen in Hustadvika
Hustadvika
From Askevågen, you can paddle out towards the open ocean to Hustadvika, between many old fishing villages, islets and reefs. There are also waves, breakers and whitecaps on the horizon as far as the eye can see, and the sunsets here are beautiful. The route can be altered in numerous ways and must be adjusted each time. This route leads westward to Skutholmen in Vikan.
From Askevågen, you will come straight out to the infamous part of the sea known as Hustadvika. (The cruise ship Viking Sky got stuck here outside Korsholmene in the spring of 2019, but fortunately it all turned out well!) Hustadvika is known for its rough waters and many islets and reefs that can be challenging for boaters. Luckily sea paddlers in kayaks have an easier time manoeuvring through this area.
From the secure harbour in Askevågen, you can paddle straight out from the breakwater towards Korsholmene. Here you should assess the wind and weather before planning your trip. Conditions in Hustadvika are variable, so be prepared for sudden changes in the weather and adapt your trip according to your skill level and conditions.
This route leads westward towards Haugneset and Ruggebukta, and then further on towards Skutholmen in Vikan. The area before you enter the bay in Vikan is exposed. Waters between Skutholmen and Notholmen in Vikan are sheltered, making this a beautiful place to paddle. You may also enjoy paddling around Litlesoløya at the same time.
When leaving from Vikan to return, you may enjoy heading out to Midtfjordsskjæret and over to Stoplene. Paddling is good on the less exposed side of Stoplene. If the weather is nice, you can also paddle between the islands of Stoplene, but be careful when paddling outside the area, as there is often a lot more wind and waves, which may make it difficult to turn the kayak to avoid tipping. There are strong currents here and large waves.
From Stoplene and back to Askevågen there is a short stretch that may have some larger swells and waves from the north right before returning and rounding the breakwater.
The route starts in Askevågen at Male near Hustad. Here you can park at the quarry, which in time will be developed into a public parking area for visitors. You can easily launch your kayak from here.
(You can also ask to park at Aas Kayak Adventure , address: Askevågen 150, 6433 Hustad.)
