Eurekavatnet by Helgehornsvatnet
Vanylven
Eurekavatnet is a small lake near Lake Helgehornsvatnet. The trail follows a good-quality gravel road with a steady climb from the start. The final section from Helgehornsvatnet to Eurekavatnet is off-path. Both Eurekavatnet and Helgehornsvatnet are notable for the unique geological formations in the area around the lakes.
Begin by walking from the car park. Cross the road and walk up along the quarry. Some construction works have taken place in the area, but the route is well marked through the quarry. Follow the tractor road that takes you further up towards Lake Helgehornsvatnet. Once you reach Lake Helgehornsvatnet, turn right before following the waymarks in the terrain to the left in the direction of Lake Eurekavatnet.
Eurekavatnet is a geological site of special interest and a world-class attraction for geologists. The lake is said to have got its name (Eng. “The Eureka Lake”) after Professor Victor Moritz Goldschmidt (1888–1947), the father of geochemistry, upon seeing the unique geological formations that explained the theories he had been working on, threw off his clothes and jumped into the lake shouting “Eureka”.
Turn off to Sunndal/Almklov at the junction in Åheim. After 4 km, you will reach Gusdal and a junction with a road to Almklov. Continue straight ahead. The car park at the start of the trail is well maintained and free to use.
